How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House by Cherie Jones

£8.99

Bookseller Review by Fleur:

This powerful, powerful novel was impossible to put down. It utterly broke my heart, but I’m so incredibly glad I read it. Set in Barbados, on one level this is a tragic story of Bajans and rich European second home owners. But it is also a universal story of what on earth you do if you find that you have made yourself a frankly terrible and nightmarish bed – how, oh how can you/do you lie in it? It rightly deserves its place on the Women’s Prize shortlist and I wholeheartedly recommend it.

Bookseller Review by Elle:

Tragically sad, yet utterly powerful and compelling. A novel about generational trauma with very little light amongst the darkness. Cherie Jones paints a visceral and real picture of these women’s lives. Although painful, the narrative is important and truthful: Life is not always sunshine and roses, especially for these women who are trapped in a cycle of abuse, violence, and misogyny.

Description

In Baxter’s Beach, Barbados, Lala’s grandmother Wilma tells the story of the one-armed sister, a cautionary tale about what happens to girls who disobey their mothers.

For Wilma, it’s the story of a wilful adventurer, who ignores the warnings of those around her, and suffers as a result.

When Lala grows up, she sees it offers hope – of life after losing a baby in the most terrible of circumstances and marrying the wrong man.

And Mira Whalen? It’s about keeping alive, trying to make sense of the fact that her husband has been murdered, and she didn’t get the chance to tell him that she loved him after all.

HOW THE ONE-ARMED SISTER SWEEPS HER HOUSE is the powerful, intense story of three marriages, and of a beautiful island paradise where, beyond the white sand beaches and the wealthy tourists, lies poverty, menacing violence and the story of the sacrifices some women make to survive.
