‘Rouge’ is a fairytale-esque romp of a story that examines Western beauty standards, the beauty industry, and aging. Very much a modern gothic, there were definitely shades of Angela Carter in the writing and there were hints of some of your favourite classic fairytales, but all set within a contemporary world and dealing with current issues. A haunting, beautifully written, dryly funny, and edge-of-your-seat type read that gives you so much to digest.
